My family sponsored the Vitins family from Latvia and Aija and Ieva attended Alger before their mom found a place. Aija, sadly, died a few years ago. Ivea is now retired from the University of Nova Scotia where she was a professor of Russian for many years. Her mother, Mirdza Vitins is still alive and received her family home back from the Russians when Latvia regained independence. She travels there every summer and stays, then come back to Ann Arbor. The two girls were placed in 1st grade to learn to read and speak English even though Aija would have been in a much higher grade. They learned FAST because they wanted to move up to their own age group. Anyway, interesting what we all experienced. Monette Holmes Park
