I went to Sigsbee and either in the 5th or 6th grade Viastrus showed up in class. He was a good deal older, a full blown teenager, a big guy, nearly a grown man but obviously short on English, etc.
My mother was very welcoming to the Latvian immigrants in the 50's and when Viastrus would come home with me for lunch, my mother would make a hefty cottage cheese salad with all sorts of sliced fruit, berries etc, sprinkled with yummy nuts on top etc. He would inhale it in flash and then she'd make him a couple sandwiches which he also devoured instantly. When I went to Viastrus' little apartment for lunch we had white "Wonderbread" toast and tea, and no one was home as both as his folks were out working. His immigrant experience was an eye opener for me.
