We've received several concerns about the volume of list traffic. The
consensus is that, while many people enjoy reading many of the posts,
the volume is extraordinarily high, making it difficult to keep up.
There has been some behind-the-scenes discussion of a resolution.
Discussion should be encouraged, but perhaps it could be reduced to
essentials. Some suggestions that might work:

1) Send emails intended for just one or two people *only* to those
people in private email. If your mailer doesn't have a reply function,
just cut-and-paste the email from the person who sent it. If you
see "ohhs59@venus.soci.niu.edu" in the To:" list of your reply,
that means it's going out everybody. If you don't have somebody's email
list and want it, send me private email.

2) Try to avoid short replies of affirmation, such as "me too,"
or comments that aren't of general interest to most people.

3) There are some things that a listserv can do do if you want to
be a part of the discussions or read what's being said, but don't
want to receive so many emails. I'll send them out in the next post
or you can email me for explicit instructions.

The bottom line: Everybody has made valuable contributions that we've
all enjoyed, but we don't want to see people drop out.
