The point: I'd have saved a lot of time if I'd listened to those
early sports writers who tried to teach me a thing or to,
As a writer, shouldn't that be two? Maybe that was the only problem.
When I was a senior, at Ottawa they insisted I decide what I wanted to do
with my entire life. (I still haven't decided, but that is another story.)
I told them I liked to talk, so my sponsor, (who I don't remember), said I
should major in speech. So, when I got to Western, I majored in speech, and
since I wanted to teach, (no Viet Nam for me), I took a double major. I
minored in psychology, philosophy, and socialology, (OK, I can't even get
spell check to fix it). When I graduated I was fit to become a prophet. No
jobs available, so I taught school, and even subbed at Ottawa. It was weird
to go into the teacher's lounge.
Then, after a couple of years I went on the road as a watch salesman, (I
stopped one year to see Hinch at Michigan in the PhD program), and ended up
with a live diamond line and gold rings. I got bored with traveling all
week, so I went to law school nights, and weekends while selling jewelry full
time.
I have practiced as a trial attorney for over 30 years.
I still haven't decided what I want to do when I grow up, but I am thinking
about it, now that I see how old I am.
