Dear Class of '59
There's a story I'd like to share with you about a group of OHHS
'59 students who met in grade school, played "kick the can", poker,
walked to school in the snow, were Boy Scouts, and hung out together
through all their years at OHHS. Between them, they have enough
heartwarming and charming stories to fill a book.
They were in each others weddings, and though most of them moved far
away from Grand Rapids, they never lost touch with one another.
They've been together through the good times and the bad, the thick
and the thin, and though they may disagree on many things, the love,
friendship, respect and care they have for one another is something
to behold. They're like brothers.
They call themselves "The Wilderness Patrol". It's never been entirely
clear what this title actually means, but it has something to do with
needing a name to be more credible while asking people for their old
newspapers and magazines. They turned them in and collected a little
money...for camp of course!
The Wilderness Patrol members call each other regularly to check in"
and to "check up". They have video chats and have met in various
locations throughout the years. They're welcome in each others homes,
and their wives have formed a bond that reinforces their
relationships.
They're always looking for new members...some "background checking
is required", and any OHHS '59 graduate is a welcome adjunct member.
The core members are like brothers in the clearest sense of the word.
They are: Dave Furtney, Dave Tooker, Phil Grubbs, Jim Coffee and
Dave Hinshaw. Harry Rosensweig is the newest member. Members-at-Large
include Webb Marris and Ron Truax, both present at the First Annual
Wilderness Patrol Meeting. Tom Ellis, an OHHS "64 is an Honorary
member.
You may be able to recognize them with their WP caps on. A very
special group indeed.
with love from a WP wife
